If a person adopts certain habits, they can reduce food waste. They should learn how to store food in the fridge and organize it so we can prevent wasting money and food. Here we are going to discuss some practical ways that can reduce food waste.

Use Food Storage Bags

Food storage bags are a key way to avoid wastage of food and stores the food properly in a more organized way. It prevent direct exposure to moisture, helping the food stay preserved for a long time. When you leave vegetables in a plastic bag, it traps moisture, which can lead to mold or fungus.

Even if you leave fruits and vegetables open, they will dry out and lose their freshness, but with food storage bags, their freshness will be maintained. For example, if you cut some vegetables and are not going to use them all at once, keeping the remaining portion in the storage bag will help you reuse them later.

Organize Food Properly in Fridge

When you buy groceries in large quantities and then place them in the fridge, you may not find a proper place to store them. In this situation, you will keep all items without organizing them, and it may result in spoilage. When the fridge is overloaded, it can also lead to cross-contamination, which affects the quality of the food.

So when you buy groceries, you must organize them properly in the fridge. Keep those items that require the coldest area of the fridge and keep them in separate packaging. Use transparent containers or storage bags so you can access the food more easily without forgetting about it and letting it spoil inside.

Switch to an Airtight Container

When you purchase dry items such as flour, rice, pulses or beans, you must place them in an airtight container. When these food items are exposed to the air, they absorb moisture and attract insects.

So by purchasing an airtight container, you can keep these items properly stored simply by labeling them from the outside. There are also airtight containers for cooking meals, leftover rice, pasta, and sauces, so these items can be covered and stored properly.

Finish Older Food Item First

One simple habit to reduce food waste is to finish older food before doing another grocery shopping. Whenever a person buys a new grocery item, they keep the new things in the front of the fridge, which causes the older items to move back and cannot be seen.

So one must remember the old food that is present inside the fridge and finish it before getting a new one. Organize it properly so that you don’t miss it.

Keep Fridge and Kitchen Clean

Food also spoils early when the area where you keep it is not clean and smells. Suppose you buy new groceries and keep them in the fridge, but if your fridge is already dirty from old food and smells, it will react with the new food and spoil it early.
